The film was a commercial success largely because the public was fascinated by the love scenes, and was led to believe that a real love affair was taking place. The twenty-nine-year-old Gilbert and the twenty-one-year-old Garbo appeared to be perfectly matched. MGM distributed bulletins on the progress of the love affair to whet the public’s appetite. Clarence Brown announced that he had never had an easier film to direct because the two principal actors were on fire with passion. “I am getting the best love scenes ever transferred onto celluloid,” he declared. “I am working with raw material. They are in that blissful state of love that is so like a rosy cloud that they imagine themselves hidden behind it, as well as lost in it.” No one seeing the film today would imagine they were violently in love; they appear to be close friends acting out a charade, unsure of themselves and a little perplexed by the demands made on them. The occasional incandescence of the love scenes derives as much from William Daniels’ camera work as from the actors.

Many years later, when Gilbert was dead and his memory was fading, Garbo was asked about her romance with him. “There never was a romance,” she answered, “and now I wonder what I ever saw in him.”
